The third Saturday of the training, we taught a public Intro to Vinyasa class to 40 students and put our knowledge to the test. It was both nerve-wracking and wonderful. Yoga teacher training is a massive exercise in public speaking, and Lord knows I get the shakes when I have to speak in public. I loved being able to help new students though. Assisting and adjusting students is my favorite part of teaching because it allows you to connect on an individual level. Some students had emotional releases at the end of the class. One said she never knew she could do yoga or feel the way the class made her feel. That, to me, is why I love yoga — to make connections with other people. I’ve only ever practiced with Cassandra, but she’s awesome. Maybe a bit too sweet, or inadvertantly hilarious with her sayings and insight. But I love it. Excellent people go every Friday too….I won’t be passing up this opportunity any time soon. Classes are also quite small…I think the max people i’ve practiced with was maybe 10 or so! So, small, intimate, and you can really focus on your own work. Make sure you get there early though, at least 15 minutes – 30 minutes for the Karma classes, on the off chance that is full (i.e. when it rains).

Sit with one leg on the floor bent in front of you and one leg bent behind you. You legs should be roughly bent at ninety degrees, but some people will have a very difficult time doign this, so just do the best you can. If you need to support your upper body a bit with a couch or chair or wall until you are more flexible then that is perfectly okay.
Drove (kind of) upstate for the day and decided to stop by the barn for some aerial yoga. Pre-conditioned to a different style of aerial yoga- I found the class refreshing. After years of an aerial practice I never knew I could learn something new. The studio is beautiful and the barn creates a great atmosphere. The instructor I had was incredibly accommodating and encouraging. Will definitely come back the next time I’m in the area!
The 90 min P90x one is the main one I do also. Maybe it’s just my size at 240 now, 270+ when I started, but by vinyasa #48 my mat was covered in sweat and my heart is beating much faster. Also I’m not really built for it. The isometric holds kill me. Need me to pick up your fridge and carry it up the stairs, no problem. But holding your groceries long enough to get down the hallway has me cussing.

There are a few ways that I go about answering this question. The first answer is absolutely yes, you can build muscle while doing yoga. As long as you’re getting to the point of muscle failure (where your muscles start to shake, you feel the burn, and you start to question your decision to do yoga after leg day) then you are initiating the muscle-building process that causes gains. Not all yoga focuses on reaching this point, and some that do only do it once or twice per class. I find the direct effects on my muscle tone from regular yoga workouts to be quite high, though I would recommend doing a class/DVD that matches where you are in terms of strength and flexibility. Otherwise, you will not get the benefits you are looking for; it’s the same as not running far enough or not doing enough weight/reps in the weight-room.
I’m on week 2 right now and this workout is quite fun! I can’t comment yet on weight loss progress since I just started but it’s definitely making all my muscles sore and my flexibility is improving. I’m learning to really enjoy yoga. It helps clear my mind.
