Karen was offered the opportunity to work in conjunction with Gravotonics to develop this knowledge and experience from her own practice and that of her students into a teaching role. She instructs how the swing integrates learning and develops precise alignment which also brings with it alignment of the mind and spirit. Through use of the Aerial Yoga Swing in the classical poses as set by Patanjali, she demonstrates how students can reach into the areas of their own practice to unlock areas of practice, realign and strengthen. Yoga practice can take on a new depth with support and open to a new deeper experience within Asanas with the use of the Swing.

It is amazingly good for the back, because the spine and ligaments are stretched so the discs find space to regenerate. Supported with different twists, swings, body-lifts for maximum well feeling, special trigger points and energy work; the hips, joints, chest and belly relax. Self healing power is highly activated, and the body is newly aligned. It is an effective art to let go of tension, old emotions and blockages on both physical and mental levels.
The challenges posed by the above list are equaled by the rewards of assisting a student in reintegrating their lives post-burn. A therapist is privileged to walk with such a person in their journey of recovery. As a yoga therapist, you cannot sit with the open, wounded heart of a student with burns, without also looking into your own heart. The work is demanding and requires a commitment far beyond dealing with the “aches & pains” of daily living in a standard yoga class. Volunteering at a local burn unit or center is a wonderful way to gain a deeper level of understanding of the special needs and issues of burn rehabilitation. Knowledge is power and experience in such an environment as a burn center or ward will be powerful. Surrender any temptations of the ego to just “jump in” to this work without proper preparation. The students with burns both literally and figuratively have every nerve and fiber exposed, demanding the compassionate and knowledgeable support of the power of yoga. The seva of service at such a center may lead you into the purifying fires of transformation in your own journey as you paradoxically serve others in their transformation.
Shake up your routine. I did this recently by attending a class with my BFF Chanel Luck at Sports Club/LA in Boston. Since we both teach and juggle a variety of work projects, it’s very rare that we can attend each other’s classes. Hers was like salve to my yoga burnout, and it brought the love back. If you find yourself heading into auto-pilot or auto-critic in yoga, try a new teacher, style, or studio. This will engage your brain and body differently and, by extension, your spirit, too.
People go to yoga for many different reasons, some for relaxation and mediation, and others for a more challenging physical exercise of the body. Depending on the reason why you want to practice yoga, it’s important to research what classes are more in lined with your intention and goals. Also, understand that while yoga has many positive effects that can be felt right away after class, other things take a little bit more time. If you are looking to get tone biceps and a firmer butt, you won’t see it right away. Not that it won’t happen at all. This just means that it will take a little bit more time.
