For those unfamiliar, Bikram yoga is a series of 28 specific poses and breathing exercises completed in a specific order, in a room heated to about 105 degrees. I try all of the techniques; I am a huge fan of meditation and highly recommend it.  I’m not talking about getting angry out of impatience or jealousy. It is injustice that gets me going. But I think it’s justified. The greatest accomplishments of this world were achieved because people got angry enough to insist on a change – the American Revolution, equal rights, the Arab Spring – do you think any of these  important changes would ever have happened if people just sat around going, “Well now that is a just a darn shame.” No! People stood up! And yelled! And whether it is civil rights, or an unsafe street corner or the self involved jackoff knowingly taking the last cookie on the food truck line, people will remain deaf to injustice unless a few voices are raised.

I thought the practice was disjointed, and spent most of my time looking up at the screen, as cues were too quick. I appreciated the fitness factor, but was put off also by all the….chatter. A bit condescending. MOST frustrating was the fact that it written that NO EQUIPMENT is needed. It is, 2 blocks. Please fix that.
IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: This is an overwhelming, systemic problem. As is the prevalence of Groupon Yoga, and the devaluing of our work as yoga teachers. As my friend Jennifer O’Sullivan wisely said, “Yoga teachers should be treated more like resources, and less like commodities”.  We need to have more conversations about the widespread issues with the current yoga studio model, but today I just want to focus on the little places that we as teachers have some personal control over this issue. This is not to victim blame, or to sweep the systemic issues our yoga world has under the rug, but I hope it inspires you to take more control of your life, right now, in small but meaningful ways.
